Countless hours in MS Paint were spent on this image, I assume.

Well, Seashore, but yeah.
I made it to show Aggronfag an idea I had.

Is it meant to be the original Gameboy...with 2 screens?

I'd like to put a DS inside an original Game Boy.
If possible and ideally, I'd put a DSi inside for the dual screens, and the front, (flipped down/closed DS screens) GB screen would become an SP screen. There'd be a switch to switch between GBA SP and DSi.

Sounds like a heck of a mod project, but it's probably doable. Protip: use the GBA components out of a Micro- they're designed to be minuscule, so you'll have more room left over inside the casing for the DSi crap.

The purpose of having an SP is so I can also play Game Boy/Color games. Micro is out of the question.

Also, incase you guys haven't deduced it yourselves, this will need:
-a left speaker
-L/R buttons
-and start/select, not in the picture ^^;

Oh, right. And the Mirco didn't have link connectivity without an adapter. I'd say use the internals of an SP.

Actually, the more I think about this, the more I think it would have to be a custom injection-molded casing. First, there's the fact that you'll need the space for the internals of a DSi *and* an SP, but also you're going to have to custom-shape the upper hinge and the body around the lower screen to allow it to close flat. What I could see happening for your switch would be a three-option switch similar to the SP's power slider. Middle is off and one way or another is SP/DSi.

You of course realize that most touch-intensive games (Metroid, for example) would become nigh-unplayable with that screen positioning, right? Regardless, this idea *needs* to happen!

Yeah I started to doubt when I was trying to figure out how to make a hinge ^^; It'd definitely need a custom case. Nothing Ben Heck couldn't do, but I doubt he'd help.
Your switch idea is good, though. The GB Light has a sorta similar switch.

I don't actually see this happening, largely it's just one of my many ideas which I don't have the resources to come to life. Kinda like 151chan, except there were people available who had the know-how to make it happen.
I'm just an idea guy.

You're absolutely right about the incompatibility with certain games. I hadn't even considered that. With Metroid Prime Hunters, maybe we could have two sets of L/R - one on top, and one on the sides. The side ones, I was originally thinking, could be inside sort of 'indents'. Pushing buttons on the sides would feel awkward. Maybe they could be on the back of the GBDS, where your trigger fingers would rest.

Since the whole thing is intended to look like an original, brick-sized GameBoy mono, there might be room for flip-down panels with the L/R buttons on them. When not being used, you could just keep them retracted and flush with the casing.

If I had, or knew anyone who had, injection molding equipment, I would make this in a heartbeat. In all honesty, it isn't that complex as far as electronics go, you're just re-shaping where the components for the system(s) go.

The most complicated part (which isn't really too hard) would be the power switch and wiring the battery to provide power to the devices. Speaking of which, I'd probably recommend using the DSi's charger style because it seems to me that my DSi charges nearly twice as fast as either my lite, my phat, or my SP. I would however change the battery pack (since you have room) to be two DSi packs wired in parallel, to provide extra life.

Cameras could go in almost identical spots as the DSi's are already- one inside the hinge and one where the power indicator light was on the original GB. Microphone would also be placed a bit down on the system to make it more accessible in the new arrangement, perhaps just below the touch screen inside the indentation for it.

Stereo audio would be a trick, I'm not sure if you could manage it without significantly altering the shape of the lower area of the system...

External ports would probably best be positioned near where the original's headphone jack is, on the bottom of the unit; it's where the most free space would be internally. Depending on how thick the screen pieces were, you might also have to put the cartridge slot there as well.

I'll keep thinking on this and try to draw up a schematic of sorts in the near future...

Now he's selling another he made. It's actually been going on for a while, but didn't think to post it here until now. It ends later today.

Wow, it went for $207.50. Someone must really want a brick to play GBA games on.
