http://pokebeach.com/2011/10/dragon-selection-set-to-introduce-dragon-types-to-the-tcg

After 15 years of Dragons being colorless, they finally get their own type, symbol, and color this January 27th.

Dragon Selection is a 'mini-set' of 40 cards, but this set is 100% holographic, and focuses on, obviously, Dragons and the new Dragon type.

>we'll probably end up with it repackaged and split up across other non-Japanese sets
We got that 'Lost Link' set in a similar way. But if we are getting a Dragon type, then I doubt they'd split up such an important addition.

It is a bit odd that it's coming now of all times, but I'm forever the optimist and looking forward to what they do with it if it's true. I wonder if the Dragon energy gives dragons anything special like Darkness or Metal?

To be honest, as Nona said, I don't see it as much of a game changer; and it'll probably have plenty of disadvantages as well. Older cards will still have their usual weaknesses. Dragon types will either still be weak to water, be weak to dragon, or both. Meanwhile, older cards will have no weakness to it at all. Alternatively, they will have lower HP and no weakness at all.

Now if only they moved Poison types out of Psychic and back to where they belong: in Grass.

I would be very interested in trying this, if it ended up coming to English-speaking regions. The official Yu-Gi-Oh online game is still going, and YGO isn't even as popular as the Pokémon TCG (is it?).
I wonder what the rates are going to be like?

From the YouTube description:
Expert Deck Leafeon vs. Metagross was released in Japan on November 20th. It comes with two 60-card theme decks, damage counters, a coin, a playmat, and a CD for the Pokemon Online Game. It retails for 3,150 yen in Japan (about $30).

The two decks are intended for players who are aiming toward the World Championships and other high-stakes events, and thus they are 60-card decks instead of the standard 30-card half-decks that are more commonly seen in Japan. Each deck is completely functional even without doctoring, containing multiple copies of key cards, including a maxed line of the decks main Pokemon.

The online TCG simulator game offers several different modes of play: Theres matchmaking, where players are matched with random players of the same skill level; friend battles, where players battle people from their friends list, and an offline mode where players battle the computer. The game ranks players according to their win record, and grants in-game rewards such as medals. Players can also join teams, which are ranked collectively. Players can communicate with each other during their games by using various set phrases; this is similar to the way communication was handled in Super Smash Bros Brawl. In December, PCL will also be hosting an online tournament using the game. Few details about the tournament are known at this time. The simulator will be supported until August 31st, 2010, but it is unknown whether the servers will be maintained after that date

It also says you can buy the set on Amazon:

>Copy/pasting the card into a text file isn't playale in any sort of game engine.
See:
-LackeyCCG, which has many TCGs, purely by copy/pasting card effects and stats.
-Dueling Monsters Genesis, only for Yugioh, but proves that this can be popular
-Duelingnetwork, also for Yugioh, but hit over a thousand people online constantly, merely days after launch

>"They" won't get lazy because "they" would be professional developers paid to make sure it works right.
This does mean that you'll have to pay for it. I'm not sure about you, but I'd rather not pay if there was this possibility.

>It's better than manual play because it makes sure people don't cheat, which you have a better ability to IRL by actually seeing the whole playing field and your opponent in person.
Actually, it's one hell of a lot easier to cheat IRL because it makes stacking possible (and don't be foolish enough to say cutting the deck helps; there are methods that take this into consideration).

The thing I don't like about pokemontcg.com is that you have to buy the cards themselves. I'm not sure if you can just buy any card you want, but if not, it means you have to buy packs until you have the card you want, not knowing how much you'll have to spend. Due to this system, not everyone has access to the same card pool, and therefore one has advantages over the other in deck building, and therefore the game is unfair from the very start of every single game.

So... you're complaining that the TCGO is too much ... like the real game. Fascinating, but you know I'm pretty sure that there's this (free) program called Redshark, as well as a few others perhaps, that already do this. You want polish and support then you've got to deal with official games which means paying money. That's just how it is. I'd rather pay 35 for a decent official handheld/console TCG game than keep dealing with the minor incremental updates of fan-supported freeware like Redshark. Not saying it's not useful, but a full release of an official game would be much more accessible and easy to use, and it would just beg to be cracked wide open for modding to add newer/older packs, custom cards, or anything else you like.

This obsession with "paying for things we want is a terrible thing" really baffles me when I see it, because if you aren't willing to shell out at least a little money for things you enjoy... Well then why should anybody? And then why would the developer continue to churn it out when there's no money to be made? Paying for things isn't some end-all evil, and in fact it's usually that you pay for things that are a cut above the free stuff but hey that's just my opinion. Well my opinion, and the driving ideal behind basic capitalism, but hey let's not squabble over details.

That is correct: I am complaining that it is too much like the real game. What it was originally like, is not necessarily the best way, it's just how it has to be, there are no other options IRL. But with online play, there is every reason to evaluate that, and I like it the Redshark way better for reasons I have already stated. And that polish and support can also be there, which, again, is the case with Yugioh already.

The problem isn't as much 'paying' as it is 'paying without knowing how much you'll really have to spend'. They could just release the whole game with every card in it for a certain price, but they don't, to make more money than necessary.

As for IRL play, I do think that is still worth it, because it comes with the appeal of buying something you can touch, physically opening them, actually having the cards, and I do admit that IRL playing is still the best experience.

I think the rest of our differences can't be narrowed down further than just different preferences.

Is it worthwhile for me to continue collecting pokemon cards? I was really big into buying them a year ago but I stopped once I noticed how much money I was spending. I have a few jobs but not many hours so I don't have a large amount of spare cash lying around. I've sold a few cards on ebay and made almost $100. If I do get back into buying cards should I go for battling, selling, or just for the fun of it?
>> No. 455
I wouldn't go into collecting if you're looking to make cash. MtG is probably better for that with their outrageous card prices. The problem with pokémon as a cash-card enterprise is that the game is in flux much more often than the other games out there as different strategies rise and fall in power, popularity, and rarity, and older cards get cycled out. As an example, the mainstay for most decks, Uxie from Legends Awakened was better than 10 dollars for a long time because of how useful it was, but then it got released as a POP league promo, which dropped the rarity of the card significantly, and now it's been completely rotated out, making it all but worthless to anyone playing current format except as a collector's item, and then you're banking on somebody putting sentimental value in a card that's no longer playable which is anything but reliable for pricing.

TL;DR- if you're gonna get back in, get in for the fun of it, and to play for yourself. It's really pretty fun if you've got a group to play and practice against.

This isn't quite so related, but with the beta launch of TGC Online and that upcoming pack in Japan with a DS "tutorial" for the game, it looks like we may at last be getting a TCG game on consoles/handhelds in the near future, so there's also that.

Nah this is pretty cool. If you have them all, then you're more able to use the Gardevoir line, thanks to a selection of different cards. For a while I've been considering getting all the Ho-oh cards, though I think they number fewer than yours.

You seem to have a lot, and I mean a lot, of evolution lines in your deck, when you really should simplify.

You have Gloom from Undaunted, but no Vileplume to initiate trainer lock. Also, I noticed that you didn't have any Azelf or Uxie from Legends Awakened. While these two pokemon are going to be rotated out post-Worlds, they're still Modified legal, and are rather useful. So useful, you rarely see a current format, or unlimited format, deck without them.

Actually, I just noticed that none of your 3 stage evolution lines are completely filled out. They all end at Stage-1, and you never see the final Stage-2 pokemon! Get some pokemon with some techs, and then we can talk.

I'd recommend going to a local Pokemon League to get more cards. There's oft unsanctioned tournaments who's prizes are simply card packs, and there are prizes for just playing enough matches. This current Season is Starter-Snivy Season. Prize cards are a promotional Snivy, and a POP Promo Broken-Time-Space Stadium.

Sorry for my rambled and jumbled post.

If you're looking to kick his ass with a high probability and have the money, I'd probably go with LostGar.

Not quite sure for specific counters to Arceus as a deck; can you list off some cards he uses on a regular basis such as other pokemon cards, trainer/supporters, etc?

What The Fuck? Seriously why is everything fucking bench burn? what happened to getting prize cards? are those just chopped liver nowadays?

I went to my first PTCG tournament today and within the first 3 matches i was utterly destroyed by 9 year olds! and one 27 year old...
USING BENCH BURN!

Seriously why is that the only legit strategy now? I researched it and ALL strategies are basically bench burn or you lose.

and that's practically ALL they're doing! I'm not saying it's a bad strategy, just saying it's the only usable one. whenever I used the bench burn on somebody when i was in exhibition i felt like a total dick! kinda like the guy who uses land burn in Magic.

Wizards would have never done something like this. Sure they would have tried it out in a generation of cards and then they would MOVE ON to a new diverse strategy. even though certain cards would be broken but Pokemon is just ridiculous with BB

What are your guys' thoughts?

Me? I think that there should be some variety in the game versus Yu-Gi-Oh esque meta game deck/strategy. maybe it's just I'm raging about losing or nostalgia raging with the card game of old but i wish some other type of game play would arise.

Actually, you're kinda wrong. Bench burn is hardly a common strategy right now in my experience, and it's hardly the most OP deck idea out there. Did you even bother looking at Lost World at all? Just because your deck is incapable of beating a popular strategy doesn't make it cheap, and just because a strategy is popular in your area doesn't mean it's ruining the game.

Seriously, you want to see a strategy that is legitimately going to polarize the game even worse than Gardevoir did then look no further than LostGar.
>> No. 439
yeah your right about the gardivoir i just the card up and god damn how'd that get passed game testing? and with the whole bench burn thing it's the most popular strategy at my card shop where i play and i was just raging about it and for that i apologize.
>> No. 440
>>439
That's the thing though: the Garde-lock strategy isn't playable anymore thanks to the sets containing the cards being rotated out. The world championship Gardevoir deck is however a good example of the basic idea behind the strategy and power of it.

How do you trade cards? I know that sounds stupid, but let me explain.
I always traded cards based on their printed value(ie: the rarity symbol in the corner of all cards), occasionally "sweetening" the deal for a card I really wanted.
Recently a bunch of Magic players have started playing PokeMon where I play, and the way they trade is by arbitrary prices set by various pricing guide and ebay.
Now this wouldn't be a problem because I ignore the fuckers, but they have everyone trading that way, or they but-in on my trades telling people I'm ripping them off.
I just want to know did the way people trade cards change over night, or I'm I just surrounded by idiots?
Also if you are a Magic player, how do you trade? The few friends I have that play Magic say they trade for what they want, not caring about how much the damn piece of cardboard is worth. Wow, sorry. Didn't mean for my question to turn into a rant.
>> No. 429
>they trade for what they want, not caring about how much the damn piece of cardboard is worth.

thats how I did it. For both Magic and Pokemon
>> No. 430
TBH, you're being stubborn. Just because a card's printed rarity isn't great doesn't mean a card isn't valuable. In all likelihood, you've been robbing some people blind because of the way you trade, and probably also lost a good deal as well for the same reason.

You trade however you feel the card's value is based- the printed symbol is just an indication of how many were/are printed in that set, so as far as value goes, it's not a great indicator. Look at Expert Belt for example- it's only an uncommon, but if you look around, it's such a useful card that despite it's abundance everybody wants it, so it's worth at least four dollars most places, if not more.

When you're talking about trading cards in a game specifically meant for that purpose (TCG), you have to take into account the demand for a card, not just the supply of it. Even though there's hardly any Alph Lithographs out there, mine is hardly worth much because nobody wants to actually use it, whereas my four Uxie are much more common in comparison, yet I could probably turn around and sell each of them for twice what I could get for the lithograph thanks to them being such a popular card to play.

In summary, trade for what you feel is worth it, but don't expect the little diamond or star in the corner to give you an accurate gauge of the cards' worth. Rarity and value are very different concepts.
>> No. 436
As a MTG player I usually will trade stuff that I don't want for stuff that need, i wont rip them off in terms in price, my trades are on a need to have basses with other cardplayers magic and alike, if i have nothing they want then oh well. Usually though my friends and i will just make exchanges knowing that we keep the cards safe and whenever someone needs the card back we'll jjust give it back, but that's between friends. If i wanna trade for something else I'll let them peruse my collection and see if they want anything and if I determine it's a fair trade then i will happily trade. But most of the time i don't need the cards so I'll just trade them for usually nothing unless they have something that i can use.
