this is part of my ongoing work on a Ruby hack that I have called Pokemon - Sand Version.
the towns are basically the same except for a more desert theme and a few "easter eggs" here and there. as this is ongoing it is of course very INCOMPLETE but please feel free to play it and tell me what you think. any kind of criticism is appreciated as long as you have evidence.

I'll try it but I just have a question.
Is it easy to hack a rom?
I mean, do you just replace game tiles and dialogue boxes?

Or is it like a list of binary and a clustermuk or other things I wouldn't understand?
>> No. 108
>>107
both. you use different programs to do different things. advancemap for tile editing, unLZGBA for some sprite editing, advancetext for some dialogue changes, etc. i have 18 programs I use and they're all pretty specialized

Okay, I was just wondering cause I didn't think it would be so cut and dry.
As for the rom, I tried to put it on visualboyadvanced and it didn't work. I'll keep trying, though.

Disregard the fact I couldn't play it, I tried it on No$GBA and it's working.
FUCK YEAH CYNDAQUIL.
Keep at it, it obviously needs work but I like the whole desert theme.

It seems it works on VBA now, you just need to press START...after it goes black after the credits thing.

ah right i forgot about that.
after the first credits, the screen will go black. this is just because i removed the intro in order to put my own (which i have yet to do) so for now it remains black. there is nothing wrong with it, just press a button and the game will continue.

Press enter or return, really.

and i understand that you're Aggronfag but if sandstorms are going to be in every wild battle until the goddamn route by the big sand route, cyndaquil and ralts need some immunity to sandstorm too.

>>115
yea i was thinking about that so i took out the sandstorms.

I downloaded it, picked Aron. I noticed that at the very begining on route 103 there were some issues with the ledges. I got walk up the ledge at one point.

Ledge problems also mean you can completely skip Petalburg, due to gaps.

you could leave in the sandstorms as long as you had like, aron trapinch and larvitar for the starters.

Oh man. That as starters...Oh god...Bitching sweet man...

Totally. I would love to start out with a Larvitar!

I'd pick Trapinch. Flygon is the only non-flying type who can learn fly.

Latias
Latios
Giratina
Arceus (He can be flying type, but who makes Arceus flying)

And from research, a fly using pikachu may be available from the pokewalker O_o

This is probably to quiet those few who got pissed at not being able to migrate their Gen III flying pikachu. Oh yeah, there was a flying pikachu event at one point- forgot to mention that.

The file isn't even showing up in the folder when I open up VBA, and it makes my NO$GBA crash when I open it...
>> No. 275

Aggronfag may be better suited to discuss this- I haven't downloaded it myself to be sure if it's distributed pre-patched or what, but you're certain you aren't just trying to play the patch file as a ROM, right?
>> No. 276

It says it's a GBA file...
>> No. 277

If it's a .gba file then VBA will open it, otherwise you'll need to figure out what's wrong.

>you'll need to figure out what's wrong
Why the fuck do you think I'm asking about it? If I knew what was wrong, I would've fixed it. I wouldn't have come here to ask about it.

Well sorry, without you actually telling me anything more, there's nothing I can do to help, so swearing at me is not likely to do anything except piss me off, making me less willing to help and more willing to tell you to piss off.

Back to the topic: if the file extension is in fact ".gba" then force VBA to open the file and tell me what happens. If all else fails, I'd re-download the latest version of VBA just to make sure there isn't something wrong with the copy you already have.

I've told you everything I know. It's a GBA file, and it's not showing up in the folder when I open VBA. How do I force it to open the file?
>> No. 281
>>280
Dragging the file over the VBA executable will force it to attempt to load the file.

For a reason I'm yet to grasp, I love the concept of a Pokemon journy through a desert, so I gotta give you props for that.
So after playing it for a few hours last night and a few this morning I have a few notes I would like to share with you;

- I don't know if you did this deliberately or what, but its possable to avoid getting your starter Pokemon/saving Prof. Marple. On one hand this is pretty cool as if you follow the right path and have a bit of luck on your side you can make it to Dustbowl, buy some pokeballs and catch wild pokemon, before you get your "starter". This did lead to an amusing little scene where Prof. Marple told me that I could keep the Poochyena that I'd used to save him, the Poochyena that I had cought myself and rasied from lv3 to lv9. On the other hand it does have its downsides such as, Pokemon battles before you have any Pokemon. Granted it can be amusing when a 'Youngster' comes up to you and says "If you have a Pokemon with you then you an offical Pokemon Trainer and have to battle me!" and then tries to battle you, but that loses its funnyness when the little bastard wins (due to your distinct lack of Pokemon) and steals half your money. Also, it can lead to important events not happening, such as what happened to me; I decide to battle Rose before saving her father and because of this, the game skipped over the part where I get a Pokedex.

- Swimmers. Once again this is something that is good and bad. First the Good, their kinda funny, watching them swim around in sand makes me laugh. That said, I can't help but feel that it does kinda take away the realism of the game. Also they have lv20ish Pokemon.

- Starters. Aron works well, hes a good choice because not only is he resistant to sand storms, but he also seams like the type of Pokemon that would live in this type of world. Cyndaquil, yeah I can buy that maby hes found in this region. Ralts, no. He just doesn't work. As much as I like Ralts as a Pokemon, he just doesn't work. Replacing him with a Larvitar might work.

- Dustbowl Cave. You probably already know this judging by the little out side path to the east, but once you go in to the caves, you can't go back out, only forward. I was also going to mention that it was weird that their was grass in there, but then I incountered some fossil Pokemon and it all just kinda felt right.

- Grass. It just doesn't look right, may I suggest that if possable you replace it with the 'deep sand' found in the desert area, but like I said grass works well in the cave, so you should keep it there.

- Player Sprites. If its one think I dislike above anything else in ROM-Hacks, its when the hacker makes a new hack and doesn't bother changing Trainer Sprites, even in a small way. I mean I understand if the games surpose to be a squeal or what not. So may I suggest that you do some minor editing, maby add sunglassers or somerthing to the player/trainer.

- Approate Pokemon. I found a Squirtle on Route 102. Given that your region is pretty much a huge dessert a Squirtle shouldn't be found wondering in the middle of it.

All that said, I think your on the right track.

I suggest the professor's name be changed to something more fitting for the desert. All I could come up with is Professor Saguaro, which sucks.

Professor Joshua?
