"Novel "Numbers" tells the story of a Soviet boy Stepan who calls for power of numerology. First, he became a patron of number seven, but then changed his choice in favor of 34. Seven is the number of choice for many persons, and Stepan evaluated his chances of "being heard" by the number 7 as weak. Secondly, the sum of 3 and 4 gives the same number he wanted. Afterwards, always guided by its number and its features, Stepan became a businessman during post-Soviet period and a very successful banker. Fate shows him manifestations of the enemy number 43, which is the opposite of number 34. And, worse yet, Stepan discovered that another Russian banker, in the same "weight category" chose the number 43 as his personal protector. Meeting with this man was predicted long before by the clairvoyant. When Stepan turns 43 years old, this fact brings him a lot of troubles, puts him in a very uncomfortable situation and undermines the balance of his inner world.
Numbers, like many other novels of Pelevin, replete with parallels with the phenomena of contemporary culture. For example, Myus Dzhulianovna (girlfriend of Stepa), identifies herself and him with Pokemon, and an FSB officer identifies himself with a Jedi.
The novel describes use of drugs and sexual acts, which makes it inappropriate for children."
